St.Margaret's Church: Parish Church, Church Road, Bowers Gifford. St Margaret's Church, Bowers Gifford with North Benfleet are trying to make contact with descendants and relatives of those men from the two communities who died during the “Great War” of 1914 – 1918, and especially those who are named on the memorial in the Church.

poppy Victor Payne, Clifford Payne, Charles Polley, James Franklin, Wilfred Harrison, Wilfred Ockenden and George Reed.

North Benfleet did not (and still does not) have a memorial and we know of several men from what was the Parish of All Saints, North Benfleet who did not return. We would like to find out as much as we can about them too. If you have any information about these men please contact Helen Chapman on  hchapman@st-margarets-church.co.uk or phone 01268 753673.

Community Groups, general information:

U3A - Bowers Gifford and District

We meet every 4th Wednesday between 2 and 4pm at the Benbow Club, 77 Pound Lane, Bowers Gifford, SS13 2HN

We have a general meeting once a month with speakers/demonstrators covering a wide range of topics. Our group is for retired and semi-retired men and women who want to pursue varied interests, both social and intellectual, make friends and have fun whilst doing so.

Interested? It costs only £20 a year to join plus £1 to attend our monthly meeting (including refreshments). Guests are also welcome to attend, at a cost of £2, for a maximum number of 3 visits.  This then gives them the opportunity to make up their mind before joining. We are always delighted for visitors to attend.

In addition, we run a number of groups – normally only open to members but guests can attend once at the discretion of the host or group leader. Cost depends on the type of group e.g. for groups held in members homes we generally recommend 25p to cover the cost of tea and biscuits, the cost of other groups depend on admission prices per venue visited etc.

Current Groups which usually meet once per month – Stitch (Pound Lane); Scrabble (Great Leighs off Burnt Mills Road); Geography (London Road); Book Club (Felmores); Craft (Felmores and occasionally Bowers Gifford); Lunch Club – we meet once a month at a different local restaurants; Gourmet dining – we meet once a month at a different  local restaurant; Walking Club – starting again in the spring (various locations); Local History – (various locations); Water Colour Art (Eversley Road); Quiz – various pubs/locations.

For more information either come along to one of our main meetings or phone Christine Lockwood on 01268 458268
